As a mixed person. My race is something that's frequently questioned. This doesn't bother me, but what does is the fact that friends and acquaintances continually insist I'm either only brown or black, even after I explain that I'm more than one thing. People try to fit me into categories and ignore bits of my background if it doesn't fit their personal perception.
I depicted my message with the RGB colour model; which constructs a colour from a combination of red, green, and blue. In this case, it represents how my three ethnicities unify with each other, demonstrating that I'm not simply one of these things, but multiple mixed together.
This piece relates to my lived experiences and community belonging due to the lack of depiction and understanding in society. I hope to provide representation for mixed people, and encourage people to learn more about what they don't understand. Thus preventing the frequent unintentionally hurtful comments that make mixed people feel alienated. To conclude, I'm not “brown”, or “black”, or “milk chocolate”– I'm mixed.
