Grounding
Artist Statement

Grounding uses nakshikatha stitching—a traditional quilting technique—as roots to anchor the body to earth, depicting the in-between state of assimilation that migrants often experience. Drawing from my journey as a first-generation immigrant, the work reflects how the mind clings to fragments of a romanticized homeland while the body acclimatizes to a new land. Assimilation brings unavoidable erasure of identity, creating a tension between what to preserve and what to release. This piece seeks to embody the state of coming into acceptance and embracing this new change.
