In Celtic mythology, ravens are associated with death, often seen as harbingers having the power to sense impending doom and destruction. They also have the power of prophecy, being able to move between the material world and that of spirits. In that way they are seen in many cultures as powerful messengers.
In Celtic lore, the Morrigan, goddess of war and death, was associated with ravens, who appeared on the battlefields to foretell the fate of warriors. The Morrigan alighted on the hero Cu Chulainn's shoulder in the form of a raven after his death on the battlefield.
My work reflects this Celtic legend as the ravens as harbingers are bringing the message of darkness and death to come. This prophetic piece foretold the unexpected death of my husband, a follower of the ancient Celtic ways, whose favourite poem was "The Raven", by Edgar Allan Poe.
