Identity
Artist Statement

Identity explores cultural diversity through the eyes windows into lived experience and silent storytellers of who we are. The work layers three sets of eyes, each distinct in form, gaze, and history, to reflect the multiplicity of cultures that exist side by side. They symbolize migration, displacement, belonging, and the intergenerational knowledge carried forward in everyday life.

Surrounding the portraits are small stick figures, engaged in acts of carrying, climbing, or balancing. These figures represent the quiet labour of building and sustaining identity within diverse cultural contexts. They echo the way traditions whether through language, craft, ritual, or spiritual practice are passed on, adapted, and preserved across time and space. The figures also highlight the effort required to hold together fragments of self when navigating multiple cultural influences.

By combining hyperreal eyes with playful minimalism, Identity speaks to both vulnerability and resilience. It honors the cultural expressions that are not always loudly visible but live in subtle gestures, unspoken endurance, and the watchfulness of communities. The eyes do not simply look outward; they ask us to recognize and reflect on the diversity that shapes our shared human experience.

Ultimately, Identity is about being seen and unseen, about the ways cultural diversity is lived in silence, in gaze, and in the ongoing work of carrying forward who we are.
