The Madiba Award

The Madiba Award is named in honor of Nelson Mandela, affectionately known by South Africans as Madiba (Father of the Nation). It is presented annually during our Black History Month Celebration to a leader of African ancestry in Durham Region or an organization that has made significant contributions to social justice, equality, and human rights, and whose journey embodies Nelson Mandela’s values, visions, and commitment to overcome barriers in his long fight for freedom and equality. The award is a striking, original bust sculpture of Madiba.

Award Ceremony: Join us for a memorable award ceremony in May where we will honourr the recipient of the Madiba Award . The event will feature guest speakers, performances, and a celebration of the remarkable achievements of the .

Selection Criteria

  1. A young person or adult whose contributions to Durham Region supports and uplifts the community at large, and particularly members of the Black community including children and youth.
  2. The nominee must have played a significant role in enriching the lives of others over an extended period of time by exceptional service through work, community service or a cause.
  3. The nominee must demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, including initiative, dedication, integrity.

2026 Nominees: 

We invite the community to share their choice for the 2026 Madiba Award Honouree.  Selections will be accepted until April 30, 2026.
