DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nThe Madiba Award is named in honor of Nelson Mandela, affectionately known by South Africans as Madiba (Father of the Nation). It is presented annually during our Black History Month Celebration to a leader of African ancestry in Durham Region or an organization that has made significant contributions to social justice, equality, and human rights, and whose journey embodies Nelson Mandela’s values, visions, and commitment to overcome barriers in his long fight for freedom and equality. The award is a striking, original bust sculpture of Madiba. The annual deadline for nominations is December.\nNominations: We invite nominations from the community to identify deserving candidates for the Madiba Award. If you know someone or an organization that has demonstrated outstanding dedication and impact in the areas of social justice and equality, please submit your nomination through our online form.\nAward Ceremony: Join us for a memorable award ceremony where we will honor the recipient of the Madiba Award during our annual Black History Month celebration. The event will feature guest speakers, performances, and a celebration of the remarkable achievements of the awardee.\nPast Awardees: Discover the inspiring individuals and organizations who have received the prestigious Madiba Award in previous years. Their stories and contributions serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela and his vision for a more just and inclusive world.\nSelection Criteria\n\nA nominee (young person or adult) whose contributions to Durham Region supports and uplifts the community at large, and particularly members of the Black community including children and youth.\nThe nominee must have played a significant role in enriching the lives of others over an extended period of time by exceptional service through work, community service or a cause.\nThe nominee must demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, including initiative, dedication, integrity.\nThe nominee’s achievements will be evaluated in relation to circumstances or obstacles overcome.\n\n​Deadline for Nominations\nNominations received by December 31st will be considered for the upcoming award year.\nQuestions?\nPlease contact:\ninfo@durhamblackhistorymonth.com\n905-706-9905\n\n\n\n
